Steps 2 Work

A new start
Here’s where our training changes unemployed peoples’ lives.

To help unemployed people to find sustainable work, we offer fully funded (free) training in three areas:

  • Care work – Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults (SOVA)
  • Security – Door Supervision Level 2
  • Hospitality – National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (NCPLH)

These skills involve improving numeracy and literacy skills over a two week course in the three subject areas above.

All training is accredited.

How to qualify
Candidates must be over 19 years old, unemployed and living in any postcode in the North West region. You will be subject to a pre-entry assessment as the scheme is only available for entry level education.

Frequently asked questions about Steps2Work

Will this training get me a job?
The three occupations we are providing training for are growth sectors and are still recruiting through the recession.

Is it accredited?
All training is accredited including the numeracy and literacy.

What does it cost?
There is no cost if people are eligible and there is a course running in your area. Courses are running in the North West and North East of England at present.

Do I have to do the numeracy and literacy?
Yes. This is how we fund the courses and you will be required to complete documentation in these roles. The training will support you in your new role and give you the confidence you need to start a new job?

Will this affect my benefit?
No. People on Job Seekers Allowance are entitled to 2 weeks f/t training a year. Incapacity clients are free to attend, keep your Disability Employment Advisor informed at JCP.

Why door supervision?
We deliver the door supervision because it’s the most generic qualification and will allow you to apply for more roles, site work, office work, retail and more.

I have a criminal record, can I still enroll?
Criminal records can be checked on an individual basis. We recommend collecting your charge sheet from the magistrates for clarity of offence and dates. The SIA has a criminal checker on their web site.

Do I have to attend every day?
Yes. The training is quite detailed and there is a lot of work to get through over the two weeks.

What if I have Dyslexia?
There is support for every client attending the course. If you have additional support needs please let us know as soon as possible so we can arrange any additional help.

Skills for Life

Skills for Life are fully funded qualifications designed to help you develop the skills you use in everyday life, such as reading, writing or maths. They can also help you boost your CV or move on to further study.

You can take a Skills for Life qualification if you:

  • are over 16 years of age
  • have left compulsory full-time education
  • do not have an up-to-date English or maths qualification at level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework (such as a GCSE)

As well as 'Skills for Life', you may have also heard people talking about 'Basic Skills'. The two terms mean the same thing, and refer to the same qualifications.

Skills for Life Certificates through CPL Training are available in:

  • adult literacy
  • adult numeracy

Skills for Life are designed to be flexible in their delivery. They can be taught in bite-sized chunks in one-to-one tutorials or embedded into other training courses. See:

  • NVQs in hospitality
  • Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults
  • Door Supervision Level 2
  • National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (NCPLH)
