Level 2 Award in Security Guarding
To work in the private security industry you must hold a licence granted by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). Working without an SIA licence is a criminal offence. Before applying for your SIA licence you must first gain this qualification.

To work as a security guard you must hold a frontline security guard’s licence issued by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). To be granted this licence an applicant must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Pass the SIA’s criminality criteria
- Hold a recognised security guard’s qualification – the level 2 Award in Security Guarding
Course Overview
The Level 2 Award in Security Guarding is a legal requirement for any person applying for an SIA security guarding licence. The course takes three days to complete and consists of the following elements:

- Alarms and electronic article surveillance.
- Identify possible offenders.
- Retails Security Officer and the Law.
Who should take this qualification?
Anyone who provides or carries out contracted security activities as defined by The Security Industry Act 2001.
