Opening the door to opportunities
To work in the private security industry you must hold a licence granted by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). Working without an SIA licence is a criminal offence. Before applying for your SIA licence you must first gain this qualification.
The role of the door supervisor is to control admission to licensed premises and to ensure that customers have a safe night out.
Door supervisors need to be able to control the door, manage conflict situations, document incidents, prevent drugs use and dealing and assist the management in ensuring the premises are run lawfully and responsibly.
To work as a door supervisor you must hold a frontline door supervisor's licence issued by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). To be granted this licence an applicant must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Pass the SIA's criminality criteria
- Hold a recognised door supervisor's qualification - the level 2 Award in Door Supervision
Course Overview
The Level 2 Award in Door Supervision is a legal requirement for any person applying for an SIA Door Supervisor licence. The course takes four days to complete and consists of the following elements:

- Standards of Behaviour
- Civil and Criminal Law
- Searching
- Arrest
- Drugs Awareness
- Recording Incidents and Crime Scene Preservation
- Licensing Law
- Equal Opportunities
- Health and Safety at Work Act
- Emergency Procedures
- Introduction to Communication Skills and Conflict Management
- Application of Communication Skills and Conflict Management
- Physical Intervention Training
Who should take this qualification?
Anyone wanting to work as a door supervisor in licensed premises; anyone applying for the SIA Door Supervisor Licence. A Door Supervisor Licence also entitles the holder to work as a security guard.
Assessment: Multiple-choice exams; common unit, specialist unit, conflict management, PI and practical assessment for PI also.
Duration: 4 days.

*To be eligible for any licence issued by the SIA you must be aged 18 or over. A CRB check will be carried out and every time a licence is renewed or needs replacing a new CRB check will be performed.
Identity, passport, certification, address, right to work and counter signatory checks will also be carried out and if applying for a frontline licence you must have achieved the appropriate SIA approved training qualification.
You must also have read and signed a PI pre-course declaration to show you are able to carry out the physical intervention part of the course.
