What is the AHSW?
The AHSW is a qualification designed to provide basic knowledge and understanding of the principles of health and safety and how to apply them in the workplace.
Who should take this qualification?
Employers and employees in all sectors have a legal and moral responsibility to look after their own and others health and safety. This qualification would benefit anyone working in any sector by giving them the knowledge and understanding necessary to fulfil their health and safety responsibilities in the workplace.
What will I learn?
The RIPH Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace consists of the following units and elements:
Learners will be able to define common terms and explain simple concepts relating to health and safety in the workplace by:
- Defining health and safety and its significance
- Explaining the costs and benefits to businesses of good/poor health and safety
- Explaining the roles of government, local authorities, employers and employees
- Outlining the main features of current health and safety legislation
Learners will be able to identify the main types of workplace accidents and injuries, the hazards that may cause them and the consequences of them by:
- Listing and describing the most common types of workplace injuries and accidents
- Identifying and describing common hazards in the workplace
Learners will be able to explain the main ways to prevent accidents and injuries occurring by:
- Identifying measures to prevent injuries and accidents
- Outlining control measures for the most common workplace hazards
Learners will be able to describe factors which contribute to making a healthy and safe working environment by:
- Explaining the significance of health and safety policies and good working practices
- Describing the main characteristics of a healthy, safe workplace
How do I gain this qualification?
By sitting a one-day course followed by a short, multiple-choice test.

The awarding body for this award is the Royal Institute of Public Health. The Award is accredited by RIPH at Level 1
